  Fog Tool Deluxe Volumetric Light
Create Volumetric Light Effects in Poser

I'll bet you thought you couldn't create volumetric light effects in Poser 4. Well you couldn't until now! Check out what the nerd has cooked up with the Fog Tool Deluxe!

Requirements ...
  • Poser 4 (Poser 5 is recommended)
  • Nerd3D Fog Tool Deluxe or Fog and atmosphere tool
  • The scene created in the Ground Fog Tutorial
Overview ...
This tutorial is the next step from the ground fog tutorial we will add a second Fog Tool Deluxe to the scene to create a light shaft effect in addition to the existing ground fog.
Posing the scene ...
We're going to add a second fog tool to the scene and create a haze effect.
  • Load the Ground Fog Tutorial scene
  • Load a second Fog Tool Deluxe from the library.
  • Choose the Ground Fog 1 figure
  • Select the Fog Control element.
  • Use the drop down menus to be sure you get the right one.
  • Set the camera to "Aux"
  • Original Fog owners will probably want to switched to cartoon view so the fog will be visible.
Tip: The Fog Deluxe Poser 4 version has EMC Shielding built in. It automatically loads a hidden shield figure.

Fog Properties
We're going to tweak the fog to pull the planes closer together and face them more towards the main light source.
Tip: Use the pitch and yaw to angle all the planes parallel to each other.
  • Set the FogYaw to -40.
  • Set the FogDepth to 20
  • Set the FogLength to -0.125
  • Press ctrl + D to drop the fog to the floor.
  • Open the Pose Library and choose the Nerd's Fog folder.
  • Double Click the "MAT Haze 2 Percent "pose.
  • Poser 5 Users should use the Material room to set this. The Fog Deluxe comes with MT5 materials. Use the Haze 2 Percent material.
  • Apply the "Remove Shadow" pose to both fog tools. The fog's shadows will take longer to render and will not be visible in this scene.

Tip: The Haze Pose reduces the tranparency of the fog evenly.
Light Setup ...
The lights need a little tweak to work with the haze.
  • Select Light 2
  • Set it's intensity to 150%
  • You will want to darken the fill light a bit. Make it about 25% grey.
  • Refer to part 1 of this tutorial for render settings

Spot Light Setup
Tip: When the fog is setup as "Haze" it tends to darken the scene. Increase the intensity of your lights to counter this effect.
Now it's time to set the fog in motion! Fog Tool Deluxe Owners continue to the Atmosphere Animation Tutorial.
FAQ ...
My Fog is all washed out or solid white.
  • Use a thinner transparency map. Whispy D1 is the thinnest one included with the tool.
  • Too many or too bright infinite lights. Remove some infinite lights or dim them.
My Fog doesn't show at all.
  • No transparency map is applied. If no trans map is applied to the fog it will be invisible.
  • Most of the fog is below the floor. If just the top edge of the fog is above your "floor" it may seem to be invisible.
  • There may be no light shining on the front of the fog tool. The fog may look like a black blob or be totally invisible. Position the lights so they are on the same side of the fog as the camera.
It takes my scene forever to render!
  • Have a look at the draft and production render settings. You may find a balance between these to get a faster render and maintan the level of qualith you need. The fog will slow renders. There are 40 planes of transparency in each fog tool. Poser has to render every element even if it's mostly invisible.
